DID or multiple personality disorder (MPD) is a complex condition that impacts people’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. Our certified experts at Faith & Hope, LLC aid individuals struggling with DID/ MPD build a strong healing foundation for long-term recovery.

CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS

Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personality, as known earlier) is a complicated emotional and psychological condition stemming from numerous life factors, majorly childhood trauma, neglect, or abuse. The patient develops manifestations (aka alternate personalities, alters, states of consciousness, or identities) within the same person. Life experiences and situational changes cause the trigger to shift between these manifestations.

There are three types of dissociative disorders, namely:

  • Dissociative Identity Disorder
  • Dissociative Amnesia
  • Depersonalization/ Derealization disorder

In simplest terms, dissociation indicates a disconnect with one’s thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or senses. The most common example of a mild dissociative disorder includes daydreaming, highway hypnosis, “getting lost” in a movie or novel, and other actions that involve losing touch with reality and awareness of one’s surroundings.

The condition becomes more concerning and pronounced when two or more personalities (separate identities) develop in a single person due to a tragic incident, traumatic accident, or abuse. These personalities often develop as a coping mechanism for the person to deal with the overbearing trauma/ pain. Symptoms may include:

  • Ongoing memory gaps about a specific traumatic event
  • Dysfunctioning in social, occupational and other areas of life
  • Shifting attitude and personal preferences
  • On and off behavioral pattern and style of conduct, body language
